Piedmont vs Coastal Plain
The NC Piedmont (Charlotte, Greensboro, Raleigh) sits on crystalline rock — wells typically reach 150–400 feet at $35–$55/ft. The Coastal Plain (Wilmington, Greenville, New Bern) has softer sedimentary formations — wells reach water at 50–150 feet at $22–$35/ft.
NC State Regulations
North Carolina requires well construction permits issued by the local health department before drilling begins. Drillers must be licensed by the NC Well Contractor Certification Commission. Wells must be sealed with grout from surface to bedrock or to 20 feet minimum.
Water Quality in NC
NC Piedmont well water commonly has low pH (acidic), iron, and manganese. Coastal Plain wells may have naturally elevated arsenic, iron, and hardness. Water testing is strongly recommended — NC DEQ recommends testing for coliform, nitrates, pH, hardness, and metals.
